Web help
With each UKF
account, you have the option of adding web-space for use with your
home or business pages. The UKF web-space is a place to put your
web pages for access through the Internet. To create your pages
before you put them on display, you must either write the code (HTML)
that will make up your page, or use a web-authoring package to produce
pages to your liking (eg Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Fusion, etc). Once
you’re happy with the look and content of your site, you then need
to upload each page and tied-in graphic using File Transfer Protocol
- or more commonly known as an FTP package. You find many free or
shareware versions in the market. This piece of software connects
your computer filing system with UKF servers and moves files between
the two, just like you would between directories on your computer.
How do
I set up my UKF web-space?
It’s very simply.
First, make sure you’re using a hostname
in your email addressing. A hostname is the name used after the
@-sign in the email address (and before ukf.net). If you haven’t
already set up a hostname, click on Email
control and enter the Email Control Panel. Click on ‘Add a hostname’
and choose a name which is appropriate to any new email addresses
you might select, and what you want the web space to be called,
eg www.barclay.ukf.net.
Once that’s
in place, either select web-space control from the menu bar at the
top of the page, or return to the UserZone and select ‘Web/ftp control’.
Enter the Web/ftp Control Panel and you will be presented with the
option of adding web-space to your account. By choosing a password
and confirming the hostname already selected, you will activate
the web-space.
Will my
account be ready to upload site straight-away?
Yes you can
upload your pages as soon as the web account is in place. However,
because server aliasing is used, DNS servers need to be updated,
which could take up to 24 hours to complete. This will initially
delay access to the web-site from the outside world.
Where
do I upload my pages to?
You will be
given three pieces of information. First the host server
for uploads is ‘websites.ukf.net’. You’ll also use your ukf.. login
ID as the username and the password you selected just
a moment ago. Input this information into the required fields within
the FTP package.
How do
I arrange my files?
You can create
directories just like you would on your computer filing system.
You may need one directory allocated to ‘graphics’ and another to
‘html’. If you want a home page to appear when your web URL is selected,
eg www.myspace.ukf.net, then you should save your home page as index.html
or index.htm in the main directory - the system then heads for this
file first.
